Pixel art portrait maker

The detailed end of pixel art: a 32-bit role-playing game portrait with soft shading, rich colour and careful pixel detail, like the party roster screen of a late-90s adventure.

From a selfie or a sentence, in about ten seconds. No card needed.

32-bit examples

Each of these was drawn from one line of text, shown under it. Type your own, or add a selfie instead.

What makes it 32-bit

Fine pixel detail

Smaller pixels than 8-bit, so eyes, glasses, freckles and the texture of your hair survive.

Painterly shading

Hand-placed shading ramps give faces volume without losing the crisp pixel grid.

A party-roster pose

A calm bust with a slight turn, the way role-playing game menus show each member of the party.

Framed for a profile picture

Head and shoulders, centred like a passport photo, so it sits right in a round or square avatar slot.

How to make one

  1. Pick 32-bit. The button on this page opens minipic.me with 32-bit already chosen.
  2. Add a selfie or a sentence. One face in good light, looking at the camera, works best. Or describe anyone (or anything) in a few words.
  3. Keep it. Download PNG or WebP from 64 to 1024 pixels, with the background kept or cut out to transparent, or tweak it ("add a red scarf").

Great for

  • Tabletop and online RPG character sheets
  • Discord server roles and bots
  • Game dev placeholders and NPC portraits
  • Profile pictures that still look good large
  • Guild and clan pages

Questions

Can I make portraits for my whole RPG party?

Yes. Describe each character in a sentence ("half-orc bard with a lute and a gold earring") and draw them one by one in 32-bit. They will look like they belong to the same game.

Can I use these in my own projects?

Yes, for your own projects: profile pictures, streams, games and your website. The terms have the details. Please do not upload photos of other people without their permission.

Is it free?

Your first two avatars are free, no card needed. After that, your first pack is $5 for 12 avatars, then packs start at $9 for 20, and credits never expire.

Do you keep my photo?

A photo you add to draw once is used for that drawing and not kept. Photos you save in People are kept privately until you delete them or your account.
